HOW CAN YOU CHECK YOUR DOG FOR TICKS

Checking your dog for ticks is an important thing and should be taken very seriously. If you do not have time that is perfectly fine, schedule an appointment at Pup-E-Tails salon and you will be good to go. Our pets can not speak and it becomes our responsibility to keep them in proper condition and groomed. If they have spent time in the grass more frequently than usual, a special grooming session to check for ticks is required. It is not only because they are nasty creatures but they can carry diseases too. It is best to keep your dog away from them and give them urgent attention if you spot tickets roaming around in your house. Both adult and juvenile ticks can be difficult to spot. You have to be very vigilant and have an eye for detail to catch them. This usually is not the case, if we DIY the project and miss even one tick, it can lead to problems for your pet. In such cases, it is best to opt for professional advice and services. We have special shampoos that target this problem and make sure that the chances of it escalating are less.

Ticks can cause lifelong infections, so it’s very important to have regular grooming sessions to tackle the issue. If you notice any kind of symptoms resembling fever, swollen joints, or low appetite you should check for ticks on your pet. Tick checks are crucial for dogs even if they are on tick or flea prevention. The transmission of the disease can happen by a bite only and give the infection to your pet.

The appearance of the tick is like a very small insect with 6 six legs. But as they feed on the host, they can become like a grey-shaped coffee bean, filled with blood. In dogs that have a double coat, it can become difficult to check for ticks but the ones with a single coat will have a slightly raised coat wherever the tick will be feeding. The simplest way is to pet your dog in the opposite direction of the hair growth and check for any abruptions. If you feel any, that will probably be a tick. Check it thoroughly and follow the correct procedure to kill them. Killing them is also a difficult task because you might think they have died but in reality, they have not. Pull them out with a tweezers and dip them in rubbing alcohol. This is the safest way to kill them.

Make sure that you do not pull at your dog’s skin very hard as it can cause an abrasion which we do not need. Just pull the tick slightly until the grip becomes loose and then pull.

You have to make it a point to be consistent with the tick checks. This will be very beneficial for your dog and keep them in a healthy condition throughout. Contact us for any further details regarding the tick situation.
